We got rained out today, so my besties Veronica and Kathy came by to help put together canvassing packets. We are well prepared to canvass all 29 divisions befor the election on November 3, 2026.
As some have noted, there is nothing really contested in our neck of the woods. Which begs the question (and I have heard people ask it): Why are we bothering to canvass at all?
Several reasons.
First, we want voters to know that there is an active Democratic Party organization in Ward 55. We are here for voter registration, constituent service, and the like.
Second, it is good training. We have a number of new committee people. Some of them have canvassed before, but many have not. This is our chance to teach people how to canvasss — and to let them know that it is not as scary as it looks.
Third, this is a dress rehearsal. Although there is nothing on the ballot that is really contested this cycle in Ward 55, the May 2027 primary will be quite a contentious affair, with lots of candidates for everything from City Council to Common Pleas Court. We will, of course, be supporting our slate, and we intend to do well by the candidates we endorse.
And finally, turnout. We need to get in the practice of turning out as many votes as possible for statewide candidates in 2028 and 2030. We will be electing U.S. Senators during those years. Additionally, we want to be sure we do well for the Democratic Presidential candidate in 2028. While our area is overwhelmingly Democratic, we need to turn out as many votes as possible to do our part.
Research has shown that canvassing is the best way to reach a voter, and we intend to knock every Demcoratic door in Ward 55.
